The Termite is a ring tool that can hollow into end grain so fast, the manufacturer in Canada calls it the "Termite." The Termite is made from high speed steel and is held with a set screw in a 7½", high strength shank, with tensile strength of over 110 000 PSI. This assembly is mounted in a hardwood handle which measures 15½" long. The total length of this tool is 23" without the cutting tip inserted in the shank. While this Tool is very useful in hollowing of boxes, goblets and hollow vessels, it can also be used for face grain bowls.
The Termite comes with two interchangeable M4 high speed steel cutters that are held in a 7" long tool shank with a set screw. Each cutter has 2 edges that are used for cutting.
- The #1 Termite cutter measures 3/8" in diameter
- The #2 Termite cutter is 1/2" in diameter.
- Also included is a grinding point that is held in a router to sharpen the cutters. This is easily done with the sharpening fixture that is included.
A larger optional #3 Termite cutter, which measures 5/8" in diameter, is available for removing more wood per pass. Also available separately is a heavier 5/8" by 16" long Heavy Duty Shank to hold termite cutters in deeper hollowing situations. The user can make their own handle or the Hosaluk handle may be used.
